1Inconsistent Satisfaction

This past summer, I was impressed with how Square Trade handled one of my claims. I spoke with a representative and he quickly resolved my concerns. Thus, I eagerly trusted them with future extended warranties.

On the other hand, my experience today was extremely unpleasant. I spent 3-4 hours chatting on-line with FOUR representatives before talking with another one on the phone regarding the purchase of two eleven dollar CD players! I kept thinking that my concerns would be resolved quickly, but I was wrong!

First, I struggled to submit the proof of purchase in the CORRECT format.

Then, I was told that the unit was still under the manufacturer's warranty. Considering I explained to each "specialist" my concern, the last one ultimately told me that Square Trade could not help me. I needed to go through the manufacturer. I was not thrilled with this response, especially after spending HOURS discussing my concerns with all the other Square Trade representatives!

Before talking with a representative of the manufacturer, I anticipated that the company would want to replace my units with the same CD players. Sure enough, the manufacturer wanted me to ship the products back at my expense for them to send me replacements.

Now, I have the following options:
1) Spend money and time to ship the junk products back to the manufacturer for them to replace them with more junk.
2) Wait a year to see how Square Trade responds to my concerns. At this point, Square Trade clearly wants me to "enjoy" a replacement product. I anticipate that they will want to "replace" the item even after waiting a year.
3) Throw the products in the trash and learn to be more cautious about buying products with extended warranties.

2easy to buy, harder to get claim paid ...

Square Trade coverage is easy to add to your purchase, but it's very difficult to get a claim paid. I would have liked to see the "requirements" and details of the program before "buying" it. That's not possible. I was told my speaker would be received in 2 days and that Square Trade would received in 7 days. (whatever that means, it's a protection plan not a physical product to be shipped) (all according to Amazon's system). The speaker was $15. and the protection plan was $3.21. Not a lot of money, but I still have a broken speaker and if I want to replace the speaker I'll pay another $15. I didn't ask for Square Trade, it was the only plan offered for this product. But when I buy another product, Square Trade better not be the only choice, or I'll need to check out the products offering Asurion protection plans instead.

1Don't Buy extended warranties on Home electronics.

Extended Warranties on electronics are a waste of money. The fact that they get pushed on these products directly with Amazon is almost scam worthy. First of all, warranties and Insurance are something you buy to protect an investment. Electronics are NOT investments. Paying more money for an item "just in case it breaks" is a bad idea. Also, the "just in case" is a very rare occurrence for electronics within the "extended warranty" period. Electronics will either break within the first 90 days (covered by manufacturer without an extended warranty), or after 4 or 5 years (outside an extended warranty period.) Consumer Reports says that electronics seldom fail within any warranty period. In fact, TVs only fail at a three percent rate in the first four years of ownership. Why would anyone buy a warranty when you have a 97 percent chance that your TV will work for numerous years?
