Great, less-expensive replacement for a "traditional" gun-style scanner.
By Amazon Customer
Our school got this to replace a dead Motorola MC3190 gun-style scanner. We needed something that would scan barcodes into an e-mail message without much fuss. After a failed try with a Windows Mobile-based Honeywell product (Android-based version ordered, but wrong version shipped), the Archer was virtually flawless out of the box. No special app or third-party software keyboard was necessary. I configured WiFi and e-mail account, and it was working -- we were right back in business. It is much better than the makeshift setup I had using my Android phone using a 3rd-party software keyboard and the phone's camera, which was OK in a pinch.
This model has an elastic strap on the back that helps secure the device as you cradle it in your hand; you can adjust the number of fingers you put through the strap so that you can position your thumb precisely over the scan button. The unit gives a nice, loud beep on a successful scan, and a nice, loud error tone when the scan is unsuccessful. You don't have to hold the scan button down, just press it and the laser scanner remains active for a couple of seconds, allowing you to retry if you don't get an immediate read (I've found that a slight sweeping motion over the barcode yields better results). I liked the setting I found to power the unit off/on automatically according to a schedule.
We use this unit outdoors, and while I would have liked to have a unit with a better water-resistance rating (this unit is rated at 4 on the IP dust/water-resistance scale, at IP64), this unit was available for a quicker delivery than the others we were considering (including the Cruiser model from the same manufacturer, rated at IP67). I'm not taking off any stars for the water-resistance rating, but we haven't yet used the scanner in the rain to really test that aspect.
This model came with a full-size charging cradle, as well as a spare, portable charging cradle (only one AC adapter, though), along with a USB sync cable. It was packaged well.
There are a couple of minor complaints, but nothing for which I would take off a star: This unit has an older version of the Android OS (4.4), and the operation of the number-shift on the physical keyboard is a bit non-intuitive (you can use the on-screen keyboard instead anyway).
I'll certainly update if we run into any issues, but the first week with this unit has been a breeze.
BTW: We did *not* get this unit at a discount or otherwise in exchange for this review.

Great PDT at any price
By Amazon Customer
Purchased these to replace more expensive Windows CE PDT for retail/warehouse inventory control, and so far these have proved to be an excellent replacement.
They shipped promptly and included a desktop and a portable charging cradle, charger and a spare battery.
Although based on an older version of Android (4.4.2) I haven't yet found any Google Play Store or Side loaded Apps that will not run.
Battery life is great, the scanner works via keyboard emulation.. so works with any text dialogue, there are programmable buttons on the front and each side for scanning or other functions, they are rugged, offer WiFi and 3G cellular communications, have acceptable screen resolution/brightness/contrast, are quite compact, and have great loudspeaker volume. I do wish they were able to vibrate (for notifications etc..) however it's a small sacrifice for such a capable device.
So far I can highly recommend these units.
