You know what you need from a WiFi security camera: to ensure the safety of your home, children, pets, or business. You want the ability to stay connected to what you care about: to live monitor or record what's happening, perhaps with the aid of scheduling functions or maybe through simple but powerful motion trigger and smart alert features. You also need the recordings to be smooth and clear so that the footage is truly useful, and so you don't have to struggle to discern the details of a scene. You want the features you need at the highest quality, without extras you don't need. In other words, you want full choice over your recording method (HDD/SD/NVR/Cloud), and you want to spend only for what fulfills your needs.
With the R2, you'll enjoy full HD securely broadcast with dual-stream and H.264 compression to optimize bandwidth usage on your network. Intelligent motion alerts provide accurate realtime monitoring. Sophisticated 8X digital zoom provides a closeup on small details. WDR + LBR enhance balance and smoothness. Powerful IR-LEDs provide night vision up to 26ft. Wide 110° angle keeps the action in-frame. Camera includes free APP (iOS/Android) and supports IEEE 802.11n 2G band WiFi and dual system backup. Versus any IP camera, WiFI wireless security camera system, or CCTV home security camera system, the R2 offers a new cornerstone of professional quality + value in the home monitoring and CCTV industries (note: this is an indoor camera, but we have outdoor security camera models such as the FI9900P as well which can be compared with weatherproof competitor models such as the Arlo Smart Security Camera). With unsurpassed performance value – including a full 2-year USA Warranty – you can enjoy peace of mind about your purchase as well as the things you love.

Great camera, too wide viewing angle
This is a great camera that is highly recommended. The video quality is superb, and I really mean that after owning Foscam and other camera brands for many years. The wide dynamic range feature that is barely emphasized here is one of best I have seen in a camera of this class. Whereas the old Foscam camera would wash out against the setting Sun on the horizon, this R2 camera shows an impressive contrast of the shot by blocking the otherwise blinding light. Really, really impressive.
You get access to real-time video with one of the many phone or PC apps available. You can pan/tilt the camera remotely, record video on-demand (local, FTP or email), listen and talk right through the camera. For Android phones or tables, I highly recommend tinyCam app. Even their free version is great but the paid version is well worth it.
Define zones and set motion detection exactly where and when you need it. For example, if you're monitoring your home entrance but a tree or brush swaying in the wind keeps triggering the motion detection, you can change the zones to avoid that. If you are concerned about your neighbors privacy and don't want to record into their property, you can set a "privacy zone" that will block that section of the video while still letting you point the camera where you need it. There's even a "human" detector with specific actions for that trigger that can, for example, text or email you when a person is detected.
I cannot understand why some reviewers here are claiming the setup is difficult. I plugged mine in and the camera started *talking* its status! The easiest thing to do is to plug the Ethernet cable in and let your router assign an IP address. From there, use your browser to change the administrator account/password while following the included setup wizard. If you need extra help, search the Foscam website for this camera's user manual or Google: "R2 R4 User Manual V2.0"
One drawback for me is the wide angle of the lens. This is actually a feature some prefer but I don't like the fisheye bending of the video. It's a shame because I would have replaced all of my 10 cameras with this one had the viewing angle been less pronounced.
I emailed the address printed on the box for Foscam's tech support and asked if the lens was replaceable on the R2 so I could get rid of the wide-angle distortion. While tech support did reply quickly and seemed eager to help, I think they were a little too eager when they suggested I turn off the "Wide Distance Range" to correct the wide-angle issue. WDR, of course, stands for Wide Dynamic Range and it has nothing to do with viewing angles.
This camera comes built-in with a PC browser plug-in. Unfortunately, most browsers are moving away from allowing plug-ins so this might not work for you. If you still want to use the plug-in, you can install Firefox ESR v52.0 which allows plug-ins. Otherwise, Foscam has a (not that friendly) PC application called "H.264 Camera Client" that can be used to setup and control these cameras. If you're more serious about security cameras and need to manage several of them, try iSpy or Zoneminder software, both free.
For the price, this 1080p, full-featured IP camera is a great deal.
UPDATE, June 28, 2017: As an update to the camera reliability, I've had 2 of these cameras fail within 2 weeks of installing them. That is a pretty bad record in my view seeing that my other Foscam cameras lasted many years without issues. Both camera replacements have had no other issue afterward. I would watch out for the first month or so to see if anything fails and immediately ask for a replacement. Amazon was very good about replacing mine. Both failures were related to network and the WiFi radio where it would hang and not connect. If you suddenly start losing connection to the camera, especially over Wifi, it could be indicative of this issue. Again, the replacements have performed well with no further problems.

I got this product 3 days ago, and want to recommend it for people who want to buy a security camera for family use. Especially for families with kids and pets.
Firstly, the camera needs to connect with the router for the first time use using a cable, after that it can be connected by wifi. The initial setup is really easy.
Secondly, the product works really well, the customer just needs to sign up in the “Foscam” app, and then you will see what the camera sees on your phone. You can speak through the app, if you want to put this camera in the kids room, this function is really helpful. And you can even take pictures and videos using the app.
Thirdly, if you want to use this camera as a security camera, it also works well. I put it facing toward the door, and anytime when people move in front of the camera, I get a notification on my phone. It tells me the camera detected human movement, and the time of detection.
All in all, this is a quite nice camera and the functions are useful for family monitoring. Definitely recommend.

We purchased the R2 camera to keep an eye on our dogs when we’re not at home. This camera does a decent job of keeping us up to date on what our monsters are doing throughout the day.
- Easy to setup
- Alerts for abnormal movement
- Ability to move the camera from the app to scan the room
- Web access
- Third party applications
- Good viewing angle.
- The official app is terrible. Problems connecting to the camera remotely can often be solved by cancelling the request and trying to stream again. Very annoying when you’re trying to see what trigger an alert.
- Confusing service plans. There seems to be an overabundance of sites that offer support and cloud storage for this device, it can be confusing trying to figure out which one you’re supposed to use.
Despite the reliability of the app, this device has satisfied our need. I hope future updates will solve the remote connection reliability problem.
