One worked but the other failed on me... Twice.

One to be used in my basement to handle the following with battery backup + surge protection:
- AT&T Gateway Router (35-40 watt)
- Synology DS211j NAS (25W watt)
- Netgear R7000 wireless router (main router for home) (33.92 watt)
The other to be used for my living room's entertainment center for the following devices:
- 50" Plasma TV (Surge Protector only)
- 2.1 Sound bar (Subwoofer on Surge Protector only)
- Cordless Phone
- VoIP adapter
- Cisco Linksys E4200 wireless adapter (working in bridge mode to bridge the devices to the main router in the basement).
The one in the living room has been working fine for 2 months now.
However, the one in the basement kept shutting off with a constant loud tone and no LED light indicator. In the manual, this means it's in an overload condition.
How can it be overloading with only the 3 devices listed above connected to it?
I initially thought it was losing power from the main receptable so I suspected the GFCI receptable, but I tested it and it was working fine--it did not trip. The device would work fine for 3-4 days but then it goes into that overload condition, shutting power off to the connected devices, including the NAS. My NAS does not report Battery Low or anything like that. The only e-mail message I see from it is when it's started again and it says "Experienced an improper shutdown".
I thought I had a faulty unit so I requested an RMA and BuyVPC sent me a replacement immediately after they received the first one.
I installed the second one and it lasted 5-6 days thinking that everything is good now, but no... I had the exact same problem again. What are the odds of this happening to two different UPS devices? I would suspect my setup but I don't know what to suspect exactly.
You can see the video of when the issue happened with this replacement. I recorded the video for customer support because it is very difficult to see this issue upon a quick inspection of the returned device so I wanted to make sure it's documented. Sorry for the loud tone!
In conclusion, I do not trust this APC model but I am still suspicious of my setup. I ordered the older model APC BE550G instead. I installed it yesterday and will keeping an eye on it for the next several weeks to see if it's reliable
I just want to emphasize that my rating is purely for the product and not the customer service of BuyVPC, which has been extremely responsive and understanding. The processed the RMA without any issues. I would definitely buy from them again.
I forgot to mention that with the first faulty unit, I tried performing the steps to "reset" the UPS, which go like this:
1. Disconnect any attached load.
2. Unplug the UPS from the wall socket.
3. Disconnect the UPS' internal battery.
4. Push and hold the ""On"" button on the UPS for 5 seconds
5. Reconnect internal battery.
6. Plug UPS in to known good power source.
7. Turn UPS on.
However, this did NOT help resolve the issue of overloading after several days of normal use.
I received APC's older model, the BE550G, and installed it on 18-AUG-2016. Since then, it has been functioning without any issues. That's about 20 days of continuous use without any overload conditions or abrupt shutdowns.
I'll update the post much later if the BE550G continues to function as expected.

Real life experience with the product replacement policy

I bought an APC UPS for my Tivo, on the advice of the Weaknees web site, and plugged the Tivo into the battery outlet of the APC UPS. I plugged other items (TV, cable box, remote charger) into other outlets. I came home after a planned power outage in my area to find that the Tivo was fried, completely not functional and with a blinking green light that indicates the motherboard was damaged (per Weaknees). The other connected items were fine. I know that there was a power surge because the line conditioner I have on my main A/V set up a floor above tripped and had to be reset.
I contacted APC and found that the process of filing for product replacement takes around two months and requires mailing the UPS unit to APC at the consumer's expense. APC does provide a free replacement unit. APC then does a number of tests to determine if their unit failed. In my case, they determined that it did not and therefore I am not entitled to any compensation. I am not an electrical engineer so cannot comment on the validity of the testing, but from the consumer viewpoint I bought the unit to protect sensitive equipment in the event of a power surge. There was a power surge after which my Tivo connected to the APC UPS was damaged. Since the Tivo had lifetime service, I'm out for a $300 unit plus a $400 service policy. If you are considering an APC UPS based in part on the stated Product Replacement Policy be aware that damage to your product may not lead to compensation.

Missing critical features
APC does not tell you that some very important features are stripped from this unit (BE550G). The PowerChute software which works with APC UPS normally displays the output load (i.e. how many watts are being drawn by the devices which are connected to the battery-backup outlets) and also the estimated battery time at this load. However with the BE550G this information isn't provided on the "Current Status" screen - all you will see is two blank lines near the bottom of the page.
So you essentially have zero visibility into how much battery capacity you're using and how long your equipment would stay powered up during an outage. I don't really see the point of having a UPS if I can't size it & my load to figure out how much runtime I'll get during an outage.
I called APC support and they were initially puzzled by this problem. After asking around, the tech gave me the bad news that current load & backup time information wasn't available on the "models below the BE750G" although I didn't really get a clear answer as to whether or not this problem affected the BE750G as well.
If you're not planning to connect this unit via USB to a PC and use PowerChute, then this problem won't affect you; but I'll be returning it and buying a Tripp Lite instead.
